They Call Him OG is a Telugu-language action crime film, written and directed by Sujeeth, and produced by D. V. V. Danayya. The film stars Pawan Kalyan as the retired gangster OG, who returns to Bombay in 1993 after a ten year disappearance to confront the rival crime-lord Omi Bhau, played by Emraan Hashmi. The supporting cast includes Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy and Prakash Raj.

OG stands out as a star hero-gangster action drama that prioritizes style over substance, showcasing a well-written hero character that’s elevated significantly by S Thaman’s terrific background score. The film is technically bolstered by impressive cinematography and art direction, culminating in a Pawan Kalyan movie that’s among the technically strong offerings in recent times.

Director Sujeeth effectively executed numerous mass elevation blocks, largely amplified by S Thaman’s impactful background score. However, the script is marred by unnecessary subplots and pan-Indian fittings that don’t add much value. Story-wise, OG doesn’t break new ground; the Japanese treatment has its moments but struggles with logical loopholes. Predictability is another weak point, but it still managed to entertain with its cinematic brilliance. The introduction scene, interval block, police station scene, and climax are perfect examples of how to entertain with cinematic brilliance without a strong script.

Characters like Emraan Hashmi’s and Priyanka Mohan’s feel underwritten. Arjun Das’s portrayal adds some emotional depth, but it’s still half-baked due to movie runtime constraints.

The action blocks are terrific, with Pawan Kalyan nailing his parts with characteristic swag. Overall, the film’s technical prowess and star hero presence make it noteworthy, though narrative originality and tighter scripting could’ve enhanced its impact. OG is essentially a fan service from Director Sujeeth and S Thaman.

Bottomline

The film prioritizes style over substance,
it’s a decent star-hero action movie that offered some peak moments with terrific S Thaman BGM.
