Janaki V v/s State of Kerala, also marketed as JSK, is an Indian Malayalam-language legal drama film written and directed by Pravin Narayanan. It stars Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran. It is produced by J. Phanindra Kumar under the banner of Cosmos Entertainments, with Sethuraman Nair Kankol as co-producer.

The film starts strong with a compelling setup, but unfortunately, it loses steam midway through. The first half shows promise, but the second half falters, leading to an okay climax that fails to leave a lasting impact. Suresh Gopi’s dialogue delivery is a notable highlight, but his role feels limited and forced, seemingly included to push a specific political agenda.

The performances from Anupama and Askar are decent, but the old-school setup and predictable courtroom thriller template make the film feel dated. The poor sound mixing and lackluster fight scenes further detract from the viewing experience.

The theme of a rape survivor vs. the state has immense potential, but the film fails to capitalize on it, lacking depth and impact. The whole narrative feels dragged down by cringe-worthy dialogues and pretentious emotions that feel out of context.

What’s concerning is the film’s blatant attempt to use a sensitive subject as a platform for political propaganda, reminiscent of filmmakers like Vivek Agnihotri who rely on hate-driven narratives. The makers seem more focused on attacking political rivals than honouring the essence of the plot.

The protagonist’s character assassination through verbal arguments feels like a cheap tactic, and the unpleasant dialogues only add to the discomfort. Overall, the film is a disappointing watch, lacking sincerity and impact.

Bottomline

Court room thriller follows a predictable template, lacking impactful or engaging elements…
