Yaathisai is a Tamil-language historical action adventure film written and directed by Dharani Rasendran. The film stars Shakthi Mithran, Seyon Rajalakshmi, Samar and Vaidhegi Amarnat in the lead roles with Guru Somasundaram, Chandrakumar, Semmalar Annam, Subathra and Vijay Seyon portraying supporting roles.

Inspired loosely by the historical decline of the Tamil Chola dynasty and the rise of the Tamil Pandya dynasty. The true highlight of the movie however, are its action scenes, with the combination of Akhilesh kathamuthu’s cinematography, Mahendran ganesan’s editing,Om prakash’s the stunts and action choreography, and the overall job done in the VFX resulting in a series of truly memorable scenes that do have anything to be jealous of similar Hollywood blockbusters with limited budget and Some debut actors. The fast forward moments could be less, but they are essentially unimportant in front of the overall extravaganza found here. Furthermore, the number of action scenes is equally impressive, showcasing the level of work Dharani rasendran and his crew put into them, which is essentially, what makes the film retain interest from beginning to end in it crisp running time.lot of work has gone into recreating the look and costumes of a bygone era, and the results show on the screen. Full marks to director Dharani rasendran and art director Ranjith Siva for this. Cinematographer Akhilesh kathamuthu displays his prowess, especially in the war scenes shot in the lush green forests of Tamil Nadu and Kerala..Β

Ranjith Siva has done a wonderful job in the art department. His work on the village area brings to life the old times and that too the life of kings. costume department did a decent job with appropriate costume and detailing, jewelries and other accessories.Β

The script of “Yaathisai” has its good and its weakness. On the positive aspects, this film manages to capture the attention of the audience due to its different periodic portrayal which revolves around an interesting group of ethnic tribes.

Characterization is very important for a period film because the artistes involved in such projects need to be as convincing as possible to portray the character that they play, or else it will fail to register in the minds of the viewers. The problem in “Yaathisai” is that, all the characters were not properly etched out. The body language and dialogue delivery of most of the artistes was very contemporary in nature and difficult to understand the language.

Director fails to sustain the excitement of the audience and the engrossing factor goes missing. The second half of the screenplay was not properly written with the movement in the timeline going back and forth which confuses audience, plus some scenes and song sequences acted as speed-breakers to the pace of the script. A good suspense factor was kept secret for sequel , but it was not put to use to its maximum effect, which pulls down the excitement level. The narrationΒ  tries our patience.

Bottomline

A Partially effective experiment!!
