Viruman is a Tamil-language masala film written and directed by M. Expectations

After the super hit komban, Viruman is the film that comes in the combination of director Muthaiah and Karthi. Muthaiah, who is doing rural mass films, is following the same track this time too. Komban is a successful film in B and C centers and ViruMan is aiming for the same and targeted at the family audience. The film is produced by Suriya’s 2D Entertainment and has resulted in good pre-release buzz.

What works

It is a cakewalk role for Karthi, who’s done numerous films of this kind, and this characterization. He’s done his part well. Aditi shankar is sure to attract the audience with her casual and lively performance, whose chemistry with karthi, works big time and good debut.

Yuvan shankar raja once again impresses with his songs, ”kanja poo kannale” standing out. Selvakumar‘s camera has kept the frames simple and clean and scores in action blocks.

What not works

Right from first film, Kutti Puli, Director Muthiah films, set in the rural hinterlands, have revolved around hot-tempered men and emotional women. He faltered with Kutti Puli, but managed to strike a balance with these elements with Komban and then Marudhu. But, with Viruman, his formula has become out dated.

Even though this feels like a familiar storyline, the film could have been engaging if the directed had written scenes that were just that bit different from the usual fare. But the problem here is that its every plot point is predictable. We know that every major character that is good will somehow be saved by Viruman, right at the beginning

Another problem with Viruman is that, though, there are two-three people with negative shades, no villain, is menacing or threatening and largely marked by stock characters and cliched conflicts that don’t reflect the changing times.

Bottomline

Outdated!!!
