Vettaiyan is a 2024 Tamil-language action drama film directed by T. J. Gnanavel and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah’s Lyca Productions. The film stars Rajinikanth in the titular role, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, Rohini, Rao Ramesh, Abhirami and Ramesh Thilak. It is the thirtieth production for the studio and marks the Tamil debut of Bachchan.

Vettaiyan, the latest outing from Director TJ Gnanavel after Jai bhim ,promised much but ultimately delivered an ordinary commercial film with limited theatrical moments. Despite boasting an impressive cast, including Rajinikanth, Fahadh Faazil, and Manju Warrier, the movie failed to capitalize on its potential.

Initially, Vettaiyan offered glimpses of Rajini’s signature style, thrilling fans in the opening 10 minutes. However, it soon transitioned into investigation mode, shifting focus away from Rajinikanth’s charismatic presence. Fahadh Faazil’s entertaining performance provided some respite, injecting much-needed humor into the narrative.

Anirudh Ravichander’s musical contributions were a mixed bag. While “Manassilayo” and “Hunter” stood out, the rest of the album felt ordinary. The background score, particularly in mass portions, lacked the punch expected from Anirudh, making this outing one of his less impressive works in Kollywood since Indian 2.

The first half engaged audiences with its investigative pace, but the second half succumbed to social lecturing, often feeling preachy. Director TJ Gnanavel struggled to balance the film’s tone, failing to harness Rajinikanth’s commercial appeal. The climax’s helicopter sequence felt forced, disrupting the narrative’s flow.

Supporting performances from Dhushara Vijayan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Ritika Singh were commendable, while Manju Warrier’s meaty role added depth to the story. Rana Daggubati’s presence was adequate, though not remarkable.

Ultimately, Vettaiyan’s inability to leverage its star power and inconsistent tone made it a middling film. With better utilization of Rajinikanth’s stardom and a more balanced narrative, this could have been a memorable cinematic experience.

Bottomline
An ordinary commercial film has less commercial potential and fewer theatre moments. More on investigation..
