Thunivu is an Indian Tamil-language action heist film written and directed by H. Vinoth, and produced by Boney Kapoor. It stars Ajith Kumar, Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani and Pavani Reddy with John Kokken, Mamathi Chari, Veera and Bagavathi Perumal in supporting roles.

What works

Thunivu only works because of Ajith. He single handedly rallies the film on his shoulders and is top class in every way. Ajith’s hard work shows in every scene and it will be a treat for his fans as he has been showcased in a superb way. Technically first half is a high-standard film. overall impact or wow factor is missing due to lack of proper subject to put things together. Thunivu has great production values, some mind-blowing stunt sequences which are by far superior for Indian film making standards. Lot of hard work by the team is visible on screen. This film’s strengths are Ajith, dialogues and stunts! But weaknesses do overshadow the strengths!

Manju warrier looks stylish and plays her role quite convincingly. Samuthirakani is good but he does not have much to do.

What doesn’t work

The film does not have clarity at all. Even after half an hour into the movie, you cannot figure out what is Ajith’s job and the mission he is on to. Too much of action can get to you after a while. Brilliant theme in hand,There is no proper drama in the film as the second half has some lags. There are some logics which go missing during the second half. It is very hard to believe that the entire police force can’t gun down one man as Ajith keeps moving freely targeting his enemies.

Coming to director H Vinoth, his script looks apt on paper but his execution leaves a lot to be desired. Even though he had a good story, his emphasis was only on Ajith and in all this, he lost out on the screenplay and only focused on the action part. This made the film a bit over the top and boring most of the times.

In the climax, things can get boring as the film has a video game kind of a feeling most of the time. The scenario during the climax looks silly and over the top. The director should be blamed for this as he narrates the film in a hurried manner. Having said that, the whole execution part looks weak and diluted. That is where you tend to question the intention of the director. H Vinoth has concentrated more on showcasing Ajith‘s mass rather than the core story, which is worrying.

Bottomline

Brilliant on paper, Terribly failed in execution!!
