Thirteen Lives is a biographical survival film directed and produced by Ron Howard, from a screenplay written by William Nicholson. The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, and Tom Bateman.

The extraordinary true account of the massive international rescue operation for a Thai soccer team that were trapped in the Tham Luang cave during an unexpected downpour is told in the film Thirteen Lives. A group of the world’s best divers, who are uniquely able to navigate the maze of flooded, tight cave passages, link up with Thai forces and more than 10,000 volunteers in the face of overwhelming obstacles to attempt a perilous rescue of the twelve boys and their coach.

What works

The best movies evoke a range of emotions in their viewersβ€”empathy, sympathy, revulsion, excitement, love, and frequently all of these emotions at onceβ€”and pull them headlong into the story rather than letting them watch as passive observers.
While Hollywood A-list creatives Ron Howard and Brain Grazer have crafted a gorgeously detailed and beautifully structured telling of a profoundly complex and breathtakingly massive story of human endeavour and bravery, it oddly doesn’t engage the emotions until its final scenes, which takes away from the film some of the power of similar stories based on real life events where the outcomes of the whole narrative are also widely reported and known.

From an β€˜on the ground’ perspective, the film follows events rather than individuals, focussing on the nuts and bolts of the story that unfolded around the rescue attempt within and immediately around the caves themselves.

The usage of some genuinely inspirational set design and convincing VFX work beautifully conveys the scale of the rescue. The cast follows suit, with Mortensen and Farrell occupying the majority of the screen time. They conduct themselves with the utmost authority and conviction while avoiding any of the customary Hollywood heroism and grandstanding in favour of simply showing men going about their business.

What not works

The film is mostly discussed from the point of view of the rescue team. The movie is not care about the emotions of the 13 lives trapped in the cave. Also do not care about the feelings of their families. It should also be noted that the film rejects the role of the Thai government and the Thai people.

Bottomline

An incredible film, kind of adventure thriller !!!
