What works

QALA,The first thing that hits you is the fabulous cinematography by Siddharth Diwan. It’s extraordinary. The production design is beautifully done. The period setting is pitch perfect, reminiscent of Sanjay Leela Bhansalis movies, his opulent film sets and his portrayal of the bengali culture. However, the real hero of the film is its music composed by Amit Trivedi and background score created by Sagar Desai. The background score is haunting and stays with you like an epilogue.. The direction was also very good. This is Anvita Dutt‘s second outing after Bulbul and she has done a great job in pulling this off.

The casting is great and all the characters are well placed, though they could have been given more screen time. Tripti Dimri as QALA is by far the best that they could find for this role, she’s brilliant and completely into her character. The transformation in her performance from a innocent girl to a matured and mysterious singer was a treat. Her eyes speak volumes, there is a sadness and depth in her eyes which you feel once you know her pain and suffering and how this was ‘normal’. She’s a revelation and I would love to see more of her in films. Without her beautiful and haunting performance, this wouldn’t have been so effective.

The play time of 119 minutes is good enough and doesn’t bore you with the avoidable song and dance sequences.

What doesn’t work

Though a bit slow paced and predictable at times, QALA definitely earns its points for the treatment and presentation. It’s an easy watch for most of it’s runtime as it’s only 119 minutes long which makes it largely an engaging watch.

Bottomline

If you are a fan of artistic cinema, then QALA is a must-watch!!
