Prey is a 2022 American period science fiction action film directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison, based on the Predator franchise by Jim Thomas and John Thomas. It is the fifth installment in the franchise and a prequel to the first four films. It stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, and Julian Black Antelope.

What works

The new “Predator” prequel movie, “Prey” encourages us to either hunt or be hunted, but it also frequently cautions us not to minimise the peril. Like the original, the main themes of this film are survival and outsmarting your would-be assailant. Dan Trachtenberg, the talented “10 Cloverfield Lane” director, expertly crafts this suspense thriller. Trachtenberg’s got the goods; he knows when to be slow-burning and understands the tautness, coiling, and release of tension, on top of the catharsis of full-blooded action.

The Predator design is unique and is quite foreboding and actually scary at times.
You get the feeling of it being highly skilled and unstoppable. The special effects are extraordinary, especially for the Predator’s weaponry.

As for the cinematography, it’s, dare I say, out of this world?? terrific cinematography by Jeff Cutter, and tight editing by Claudia Castello and Angela M. Catanzaro, Featuring a great score by Sarah Schachner (especially the bookended, more elegiac music).

The whole cast is amazing, especially Amber Midthunder, and the action sequences do not disappoint.

What not works

The element of surprise that is essential to most suspense movies is immediately lost in “Prey.” That audience is aware of the surroundings and the circumstances. Not Naru and the Comanche tribe. And it’s never ideal in a suspense thriller with a monster when the audience knows the outcome of the story before the character does. However, despite this fundamental design defect and the inevitable consequences that result from it from the start, we can pretty well guarantee that Naru will outsmart and survive.

Bottomline

β€œPrey” is very well constructed on a cinematic level!!!

The best in the franchice after Predator ( 1987 )
