2023 started with a fresh start and plenty of mileage for the Tamil-Telugu film industry. In Telugu, Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy, Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya, Vijay’s Varisu, and Ajith’s Thunivu hit theatres on the same weekend. The Telugu-dubbed versions of Varisu and Thunivu were also released. When four big budget films were released at the same time, the trade people were concerned, but to everyone’s surprise, not only did all four films become huge hits, but all four films have collected more than 700 crores at the box office to date. While Bollywood struggles for a hit, four films with four-star heroes from South India become blockbusters at the same time.
Thunivu and Varisu, which were released on January 11th in Tamil Nadu, kicked off the Sankranti festival. The 11th of January 2023 is the highest theatrical collection day in Tamil Nadu cinema history, with both films grossing more than Rs 45 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. It’s worth noting that both films, which debuted as “Average Talk,” grew after the third week.
Ajith’s Thunivu, Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya, and Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy will have crossed the break even when the second weekend. Vijay’s Varisu, which is far ahead in collections among its Sankranti and Pongal releases, is expected to break even in the 3rd week due to its relatively high theatrical business.
