Pathonpatham Noottandu a Malayalam-language period drama film written and directed by Vinayan. Set in the 19th century Travancore, the story is based on the life of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, a warrior and social reformer, born to an aristocratic Ezhava family known as Kallisseril Tharavad, who were the rulers of a small independent province called β€˜Mangalam, who stood against social injustice. The film also depicts Nangeli and Kayamkulam Kochunni. The film stars Siju Wilson, Anoop Menon, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sudev Nair, Indrans, and Alencier Ley Lopez. The film was produced by Gokulam Gopalan through Sree Gokulam Movies. M. Jayachandran composed the songs, while Santhosh Narayanan composed the background score.

What works

The film deals with breast tax and casteism at the period in Kerala. Director Vinayan focused on social issues rather than glorifying hero. The effort taken by the entire team can be seen on the screen. Especially Siju Wilson, he nailed as Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker. Excellent cinematography, background music, songs, costumes and sets created by the art department all stood out.
Nangeli episode was main highlight of the movie and director Vinayan brilliantly portrayed the bloody casteism mix with myth.

What not works

While it tried to do justice to the film’s title by haphazardly splicing together a number of historical incidents, the screenplay lacked emotional connection and intensity. The dramatization of the dialogues and the lack of quality of the supporting cast caused further problems for the film. Apart from this, the repetitiveness and flaws in the screenplay were resounding.

Bottomline

Focused on social issues rather than glorifying hero, A little bit dramatic!!!!
