Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age. Cillian Murphy stars as Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer; Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, Oppenheimer’s military handler; and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The ensemble supporting cast includes Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
Often, the movie is not romance, comedy, action, or VFX, but something beyond that. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a good example of this statement. When Oppenheimer’s life story, which is well-known to everyone, reached the screen using the endless possibilities of the CINEMA, the audience saw the universe of the filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Nolan reminds us once again that the film is a director’s art, and the best examples are- the Atomic bomb explosion situation, and the way the emotional Oppenheimer is visualized after that and the vibrating visuals are Nolan’s genius approach. Not only does the Oppenheimer-Einstien climax conversation raise the quality of the film, but Nolan adds to his filmmaking by condensing the three-hour film into it.
It would be a disservice not to mention Cillian Murphy’s Oscar-deserved performance. Cilian Murphy has made the emotions of the atomic bomb test and the guilt, fear, horror, and joy of the aftermath sublime. Perhaps no one else has been able to capture the moments when an actor questions his acting skills, which he fears most. Robert Downey Jr. broke the mould of his previous acting formulas.
Hoyte van Hoytema brings Oppenheimer to the pinnacle of visual excellence as the visuals combine with Nolan’s vision and Cillian Murphy’s emotions. Ludvin Gorranson’s music is heart broken, especially that blast scene and court scene.
Filmed as a biopic of Oppenheimer, the audience expecting war, action, and the Hiroshima bombing may be disappointed, but they cannot reject Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Try to watch the technically superior film only in theatres with good technical quality.
Bottomline
Most of the time, movies are not Romance, comedy, action, and VFX; they are something else beyond that.
