It released on 11 November 2022 via Netflix.

What works

The urban noir thriller Monica o my darling by Vasan Bala is good. The movie is a triumph of casting and an homage to performers, but it’s also about intelligent screenplay, competent execution, and biting social critique. In this movie, neither white nor black exist. It enjoys existing in the grey area where morality and intentions are willfully subverted. In this movie, no one seems to be passing judgement on anyone, and no one is given a backstory to justify their heinous deeds. Despite the script’s flaws, you never give up on this twisted, sinister group as they joyfully descend to their terrible depths. The first half’s humour tidbits are equally delightful.

A cast of performers with exceptional talent, including Rajkummar Rao, Radhika Apte, and Huma Qureshi, are in command of this interesting murder mystery under the direction of Vasan Bala with astonishing haste. Everyone contributes their dysfunctional best to this twisted, convincing whodunit that occasionally deviates into the strange.

In addition, the background score enhances the excitement, especially the placement of nostalgic old hit songs. This gives a completely new feel to the film altogether.

What doesn’t work

Monica, O My Darling has all the elements of a top-notch suspense thriller, but its execution suffers greatly. After an intense build-up in the first half, the movie takes a sharp turn with killings that unfold at a speed that is hard to comprehend after the intermission. Furthermore, while having too many back stories may help the tale progress, after a while they all tend to blend together and you lose track of what to truly concentrate on.
