Mission Majnu is a Hindi-language spy thriller film directed by Shantanu Bagchi and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Amar Butala and Garima Mehta. Starring Sidharth Malhotra and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, the film is a fictional story of India’s covert operation, taking place before and during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

What works

The director Shantanu Bagchi has prepared Mission Majnu by mixing all the elements that come to mind when you think of a spy thriller. A thriller with an engaging plot ,twist, love, action, thrill and emotion, centered around two countries’ nuclear secrets.
The hero’s back story and emotional core make the film stand out. The emotional core and patriotism factor is what keeps the movie engaging. Sidharth Malhotra‘s measured performance benefits the film. The detailing and circumstances of 1971 period have been well communicated by the director.

What doesn’t work

The film follows all the elements and structures that spy thrillers follow. That alone creates a cliche feel. The action scenes at the high point of the film fail to make any impact. Most of the times was predictable not only that the film does not do justice to the thriller genre. Rashmika, who came as the heroine, had nothing special to do.

Bottomline

Decent espionage thriller, largely worked because of emotional core!!
