Expectations
Jayaram is back, a phrase that has been heard by the Malayalee audience for some time. This time there is a sentence with it, Meera Jasmine is back. In fact, none of them went anywhere to come back. It may be true that the flaws and failures in the selection of the film made them irrelevant, but one hit was enough for them to overcome that fall. This time the two are teaming up with director Sathyan Anthikkad, the beloved director of the family audience. He is one of the few Malayalam directors who has survived the changes and times of Malayalam cinema. He has often been Jayaram‘s savior during bad times in his career.
The expectations of the film are on the shoulders of Sathyan Anthikkad,Makal is his next directorial flick after the blockbuster Njan Prakashan.
What works
The Devika – Naslen combination scenes worked out well. Both of them performed well, especcially Naslen, excelled in comedy scenes.Jayaram had nothing to do but did a good job as an expatriate family man.
What not works
Iqbal kuttippuram’s story did not have enough depth. The film was often rich with cliched scenes that were essential to a family film and ends with a half-baked arrangement of such scenes. Meera seems to be struggling to act, often testing the audience patience with her lazy acting skills.
Siddique and Innocent, who are regulars in Sathyan Anthikkad’s films, are limited to mere spectators in the film.
Bottomline
