Kannur Squad is a Malayalam-language crime drama film directed by Roby Varghese Raj in his directorial debut and written by Muhammed Shafi and Rony David. The film stars Mammootty, alongside Vijayaraghavan, Rony David, Kishore, Shabareesh Varma and Azees Nedumangad. It is produced by Mammootty himself under the banner of Mammootty Kampany.

The film is about the exciting journey of a four-member team known as the Kannur Squad as they embark on a case investigation. The film comes in the line of Kuttavum Shikshayum and Unda films but does not follow in their footsteps. Kannur Squad turns out to be another great product of actor Mammootty and his own production house, Mammootty Company, still looking for a difference at 72 year old.

For two hours and 45 minutes, the debutant director Roby varghese makes to be a great visual experience, with not a single second boring. The main feature of the film is its deconstruction of the formulas of superstar films. Mammootty once again plays the helpless green man. The actor can’t even think of a challenging character or anyone else as that character. The director has taken special care to give accurate identities and backgrounds to everyone in the ensemble. Not only Rony david,Shabareesh varma and Azeez, but every character who shows their head makes an impact in performances, detailing, and identity. Each of the Northern characters was like that.

The technical aspect of the film plays a major role in making the quest interesting in ways full of fear and dread. Sushin Shyam’s music and Back ground score is the backbone of the film, infusing fear, intensity, elevation, silence, and noise. The cinematographer’s role as Muhammed Rahil is no small one.

The intense action scenes orchestrated by the 7-8 action choreographers are stand out. Especially the fight in the village and the climax action. Fragments of conversation The right place and the right time made the scenes more impactful. The detailing in the narration also did justice to the genre of the film.

The first half of the movie is sure to disappoint the audience, which comes to the theatre looking for a mass entertainer. because it’s a staging of a crime and detailed of Kannur squad. Second-half high points, that is what makes the movie more enjoyable to watch.

Bottomline

An ambitious investigation thriller that hooked you through out!!
