Gold is a Malayalam thriller film written, edited and directed by Alphonse Puthren. Produced by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames, the film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara in the lead roles.

Expectations

After the super hits Neram and Premam, the film directed by Alphonse Puthren is the main attraction of Gold. It remains to be seen how much the opening will be with a promotional strategy that is only limited to posters without releasing any trailer cuts or songs. Alphonse is directing after a huge hiatus after the huge success of Premam, so that hiatus has greatly reduced the connection between Alphonse and the audience. The fate of the film depends on the content of the film. The fact that Prithviraj doesn’t always make big shots in the opening may also affect the opening for Gold. Nayanthara-Prithviraj acting combo is another positive factor that the movie puts forward. Trade assumes that, this promotion strategy is just the calm before the storm. Alphonse Puthren‘s confidence on social media reinforces that belief.

What works

There are two or three things that can be said positively about the movie. First thing is some comedy scenes and the performances of the actors in many places were excellent, especially Shammi Thilakan and Lalu Alex. It is true that Alphonse Puthren‘s Mark style of making gave a positive side to the film. And some experiments created by Alphonse Puthren in the editing table and the background score are also being worked out in some places.

What doesn’t work

The film does not offer anything new in terms of content and the director is testing the audience by stretching the limited storyline for two hours and 45 minutes.

The two hour and 45 minute film fails miserably at many points. The film often fails to communicate to the audience to the extent the director intended. It was also sad that Nayanthara, who came in as the heroine, was limited to an extensive cameo appearance. Many of the scenes with Mallika Sukumaran and Prithviraj felt like a drama in the first half. Prithviraj‘s lack of flair in handling comedy also affects the film. Alphonse Puthren‘s editing experiments seemed to have been done for a reason. In many situations it didn’t help the story to make an impact. Some nature love visuals captured by the camera only served to increase the length of the film. The climax, which did not suit the movie at all, made the movie half-baked.

Bottomline

All that glitters is not GOLD, sometimes it is rolled GOLD!!!!
