Detective ujjwalan is a Malayalam language crime thriller drama,
Produced by Sophia Paul under the banner of Weekend Blockbusters and directed by Indraneel Gopeekrishnan & Rahul G, this film marks the second installment of the Weekend Cinematic Universe,β
Actor Dhyan Sreenivasan plays Ujjwalan in the film. Siju Wilson, Rony David, Kottayam Nazeer, Seema G Nair, Kalabhavan Navas, Ameen, Nihaal Nizam, Nirmal Palazhy, Josy Sijo, Nibraz Noushad, and Shahubas are also a part of the film cast.
Detective Ujjwalan is set in the fictional village of Plaachikkaavu, free from crime and problems. However, the peace of the village is disturbed when a series of gruesome murders takes place by someone called βBoogeymanβ.
Amid these murders, detective Ujjwalan is called to solve the case. While he looks into the case, an investigation team reaches too. While Ujjwalan’s efforts are not taken seriously initially, he remains optimistic about uncovering the real identity of the murderer.
A neatly crafted crime thriller drama with moments of comedy that hit and miss. The film largely follows the track of ‘Kunjiramayanam,’ capturing the essence of village life and its people. While the characters are interesting, their potential remains underutilized β a prime example being the Kudos media YouTubers, who could have added more depth but weren’t fully leveraged.
The comedy elements sometimes land and sometimes fall flat, making it inconsistent. On the other hand, the mystery murder plot hooks you in, but the lack of significant twists and turns in the initial part makes it feel flat. However, the last 40 minutes are the saving grace, with unexpected turns that elevate the story. The technical aspects, especially cinematography and music, enhance the film’s atmosphere, bringing the village and its situations to life.
Siju Wilson delivers a commendable performance, and the supporting cast does justice to their roles. Dhyan Sreenivasan’s portrayal of Ujjwalan is decent but doesn’t stand out as one of his best. What’s intriguing is that some characters seem to be setting the stage for a larger cinematic universe, particularly with the upcoming film ‘Jambi.’ The post-credit scenes are a must-watch, as they hint at new developments in this universe.
Bottomline
Neatly crafted crime thriller with hit-and-miss comedy! Last 40 minutes are the game-changer, with impressive tech aspects. BUT DON’T MISS the post-credit scenes – a new cinematic universe is unfolding!!
