Expectations
“Coolie” is aTamil-language action thriller film helmed by acclaimed director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the renowned banner of Sun Pictures, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. At the forefront are stalwarts like Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna, alongside talented actors Soubin Shahir and Upendra, bringing their unique flair to the film. The cast is further strengthened by the presence of Shruti Haasan and Sathyaraj, who add depth and nuance to the narrative.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the film is the inclusion of Aamir Khan in a lead role, marking a significant crossover in the Tamil film industry. The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring talented actors like Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, Kaali Venkat, and Charle. Reality
“Coolie” is a mediocre revenge drama that fails to leave a lasting impact despite having a few solid moments scattered throughout the film. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, this movie marks a misstep for the acclaimed filmmaker, showcasing an imbalanced and flat narration that makes the plot predictable and non engaging.
The writing department, which is usually a strong point for Lokesh’s films, falls short in “Coolie.” The story relies heavily on drama, which partially works but lacks the typical elevations and style that Lokesh’s previous works are known for. One notable exception is a well-executed flashback sequence towards the climax, which shows glimpses of what could have been if the rest of the film was as engaging.
The performances, however, are not entirely disappointing. Rajinikanth, as always, carries his role with his trademark swag and delivers a few signature moments. Soubin Shahir shines through in his scenes, bringing some much-needed energy to the film. Nagarjuna gets a refreshing role and delivers superbly, but his character is unfortunately sidelined in the second half.
On the other hand, the cameos feel forced and unwanted, adding nothing substantial to the narrative. Anirudh’s music is apt and tries to elevate the film where possible, but it’s not enough to salvage the overall mediocrity. The “Kokki” mansion background score is a standout, but it’s a small consolation in an otherwise underwhelming soundtrack.
The production values are mid, and the film lacks the technically strong output that we expect from Lokesh Kanagaraj. The action blocks are well-executed at times, but when the rest of the film is not up to the mark, these moments lose their impact.
Overall, “Coolie” feels like a wasted opportunity, especially given the star-studded cast and the potential of the story. While Rajinikanth and Soubin Shahir’s performances are highlights, they’re not enough to redeem the film’s numerous shortcomings. If you’re a fan of Lokesh Kanagaraj or Rajinikanth, you might want to temper your expectations before watching “Coolie.”
