The 95th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 12 ,Big day for Indian cinema. Three nominations for Indian films, including RRR‘s ‘Naatu Naatu’. RRR joins a select group of Indian films that have received Oscar nominations: For Best International Feature Film, Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan were nominated and Writing with fire for best documentary feature.

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards had already been announced, and, no surprises, RRR had been nominated for an Oscar (one of three nods for Indian cinema) for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, which also won the Golden Globe in the same category. Naatu Naatu will compete against four other nominated songs: Applause from Tell It Like A Woman, Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and This Is A Life from Everything Everywhere All At Once. A notable omission is Taylor Swift’s Carolina from Where The Crawdads Sing, which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Two Indian-made documentaries are also going to the Oscars – All That Breathes has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film and The Elephant Whisperers for Best Documentary Short.

RRR,The elephant whisperers and All that breathes join a select group of Indian films to have gone to the Oscars: Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988), and Lagaan (2001) were nominated for Best International Feature Film and Writing with fire (2021) -for best documentary feature.

If Naatu Naatu composer MM Keeravaani wins an Oscar in addition to his Golden Globe, he will join a group of Indian Oscar winners that includes Bhanu Athaiya, who won Best Costume Design for Gandhi, and AR Rahman, Gulzar, and sound engineer Resul Pookutty, who won Oscars for their work in Slumdog Millionaire, a British-made film set in India.
